For over five centuries, Vilnius' ancient city gates, known as the Gates of Dawn, have stood as guardians against enemies, with the renowned icon of the Mother of God adorning them. Pilgrims have journeyed there for centuries, drawn by reports of miraculous graces bestowed upon those who prayed before the icon. What's lesser-known is that in 1931, at the instruction of Saint Faustina Kowalska and her spiritual director Fr. Michael Sopocko, the first Image of Divine Mercy was painted in Vilnius by artist Eugene Kazimirovski. This image, now globally recognized, was first unveiled to the public in Vilnius in 1935, alongside the revered icon of the Mother of Mercy, during a celebration that now marks "Mercy Sunday" approved by the Vatican.
